Beginning Blogging Series: How NOT to Use Type

Everyone has seen an ugly PowerPoint presentation, a tacky and difficult to read flyer, or a painfully bad Yellow Pages ad. Chances are you've seen all three of these examples in abundance. One of the classic methods of ruining a printed piece is through the use of bad typographic practices. Unfortunately, shortly after the internet revolutionized into a forum for the general public, these ill-advised practices began popping up on web pages world wide.
Bloggers and web content self-publishers. Please, please, I beg you - avoid these top three typographic taboos and do the entire seeing world a favor!
#1: Too many different fonts and colors
A college professor of mine once advised us never to exceed two typefaces for any design, with the exception of . I agree with him 100%. Generally a header font and a body text font suffice perfectly, and they don't even need to differ! Often times, a larger, and optionally bold, version of the same typeface can create the most unified look possible. Overdoing it with the color on type can ruin a color scheme and hinder legibility, so please tread lightly.

Morbi interdum accumsan mauris!

Morbi interdum accumsan mauris a luctus. Maecenas gravida pellentesque libero, et imperdiet diam pharetra vel. Ut arcu tortor, tempus sed accumsan vel, mattis in magna.
#2: Center the Entire Page
Quite commonly, we will see a page where the author has, for reasons unknown to me, decided to center the entire body of text. Centering a headline is okay, as it is only a sentence at most, but the human eye tires easily when reading a large block of centered text. When laying out body text, stick to left or justified alignment.

Aenean dapibus lorem massa. Fusce vulputate tristique lectus a aliquet. Pellentesque commodo nibh non nisi aliquet interdum. Nunc massa quam, semper id interdum eget, porta nec sapien. Integer vitae elit odio, in volutpat dolor.

#3: Similar Background and Text Colors
This one is seen regularly on MySpace - designers using a background color and a text color which are almost identical. I have encountered a few pages which are so bad that I actually had to highlight the text in order to read it! For best readability, use black (or dark grey) over white, or white over black. Other combinations are certainly acceptable at times; just make sure that the text color really stands out.
